Abengoa, with desalination in Latin America

March 8, 2019

  • It has recently participated in a conference on this sector in Chile.

March 8th, 2019 – Abengoa (MCE: ABG/P:SM), the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainability in the infrastructures, energy and water sectors, has participated together with AAGES, in the congress and international investment exhibition "Desalinización América Latina", which was held in Santiago de Chile on March 6 and 7, organized by Vostock Capital.

In this congress, outstanding representatives of the public sector, mining industries and developers of Latin America have participated, such as the Ministry of Public Works of Chile, the Ministry of Environment of Peru, the State Water Commission of Baja California, the National Corporation Chile Copper (Codelco), Andes Iron, Southern Peru Copper Corporation, Energias y Aguas del Pacifico (Enapac), Antofagasta Minerals SA, among other relevant players in the sector, next to companies specializing in the desalination sector (engineering, construction companies, suppliers, etc.).

Latin America currently represents one of the most important emerging markets in water desalination and reuse, where it is expected to invest more than 20 billion dollars, with more than 20 major desalination projects to be implemented between 2020 and 2025, according to Vostock Capital.

In the framework of this event, Ramón Rubio Vicente, director of Business Development in Latin America of the Water division of Abengoa, participated with a speech based on desalination and renewable energies, areas in which the company is working to provide technological solutions that allow the improvement of the energetic efficiency and reduce the desalination costs, as well as the increase of the environmental and social benefits with the use of renewable energies.

Abengoa has been present in South America for more than 50 years, where it has facilities that treat more than 1.5 million cubic meters of water per day and 100 MW of solar energy. Currently, it is building the first thermosolar plant in Latin America, of 110 MW, for Cerro Dominador in Chile. This plant, with tower technology, will have a thermal storage capacity in molten salts of 17.5 hours and will be added to the 100 MW photovoltaic plant already in operation since 2018, built by Abengoa, to form a renewable energy complex with a total capacity of 210 MW and the first that combines both technologies throughout the continent.

Abengoa is an internationally reference and leader in the global desalination rankings, which has plants with a global capacity to produce 2.8 million cubic meters per day of desalinated water, of which 1.3 million meters cubic per day are under construction.
