Abengoa to donate its painting “San Pedro Penitente de los Venerables” by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo to the Focus-Abengoa Foundation

June 27, 2014

June 27, 2014. - Abengoa is going to donate its painting “San Pedro Penitente de los Venerables” by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, to the Focus-Abengoa Foundation. This uniquely valuable work was painted by the Sevillian artist and commissioned by Justino de Neve, founder of the Hospital de los Venerables, who donated it in 1685 to the Baroque building and now home to the Focus-Abengoa Foundation’s headquarters.

In 1810, the painting left the Hospital de los Venerables, after being plundered during the Napoleonic invasion, although its original frame still remains on the main altar of the church. After passing through different collections for more than two centuries, with its whereabouts unknown for the last few decades, a lengthy search and investigation was launched that concluded with the extraordinary discovery of this painting. It was displayed for the first time at the “Murillo and Justino de Neve. The art of friendship” exhibition (2012, Museo del Prado, Focus-Abengoa Foundation, Dulwich Picture Gallery), curated by Gabriele Finaldi, head of research and conservation at the Museo Nacional del Prado, and was temporarily on show at the Hospital de los Venerables. It is now being returned, once and for all, to its proper home and to Seville, from where it should never have left.

Today, the Focus-Abengoa Foundation is making this dream come true by recovering this piece of heritage for the history of Spanish art in general and for Sevillian painting in particular.

The work, which is currently located in the United Kingdom but has just been granted an export license from the Arts Council England, will be sent directly to the Museo Nacional del Prado, with which the Focus-Abengoa Foundation has close ties, where it will undergo a technical study and be cleaned.
