Abengoa starts commercial operations at the Qingdao desalination plant in China

January 30, 2013

  • The plant will produce 100,000 m3/day of drinking water from sea water, sufficient to supply the needs of half a million people.
  • The company, which began constructing the plant in 2010, will operate and maintain it for a 25 year period.

Seville, January 30, 2013. Abengoa, the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainable development in the energy and environment sectors, has begun commercial operations at the desalination plant in the city of Qingdao, the second largest commercial port in northern China in the province of Shandong.

The plant will produce 100,000 m3/day of drinking water from sea water, which will supply the needs of half a million people. It uses reverse osmosis technology with innovative designs in the pre-treatment stage (ultra-filtration membranes) and in the centralized pumping system. Thanks to this technology and a new system for remineralizing desalinated water, the water produced has one of the lowest levels of turbidity. The plant can also operate at extreme temperatures and is highly energy efficient.

The company, which began constructing the plant in 2010, will be responsible for operating and maintaining it for 25 years. During this time it forecasts revenues in excess of €750 million from the sale of water and a further €25 million from technical support operations.

The project, which required a total investment of €135 million, is the first desalination project carried out using a project finance structure totally financed by local Chinese banks.

This project will increase Abengoa’s installed water desalination capacity to nearly 1,100,000 m3/day, equivalent to supplying drinking water to more than 8 million people. Its technology contributes to resolving the serious lack of drinking water in numerous countries around the world, encouraging their global development.

Abengoa is consolidating its position as a world leader in the water sector and has already developed desalination plants in Algeria, Ghana, India and Spain.
