Abengoa calls on the European Union to commit to a greater reduction in its CO2 emissions

November 18, 2010

Seville, 18 November 2010. Abengoa has today called on the European Union to commit to a greater reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions at the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 16) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will take place between 29 November and 10 December in the Mexican city of Cancun. The conference will be an opportunity to promote a global agreement that could prevent the serious consequences of climate change.

According to Felipe Benjumea, Chairman of Abengoa, “Europe must continue to lead the efforts to eliminate CO2, committing to a reduction of more than 30% by 2020. This will not only help to prevent the consequences of climate change, but will also promote economic growth, employment creation and innovation”.

Abengoa’s Chairman went on to say that, “It is crucial that the Cancun meeting obtains additional commitments from every country to achieve an effective reduction in global carbon emissions. In order to prevent the imminent deterioration of the environment, we – governments and companies – need to encourage a new paradigm based on the use of renewable energy, responsible consumption, clean production and the basic principle that the prices and services of goods include their environmental cost”.

Abengoa Bioenergy has a system for measuring greenhouse gas emissions that, in addition to recording the direct and indirect emissions of all the companies in its group, also records those derived from the products and services that it purchases from third parties. This system enables the company to quantify the emissions generated by its activities on an annual basis in order to set targets to reduce, offset and neutralise its CO2 emissions and to label its products and services with their associated carbon dioxide.

Furthermore, to encourage the creation of solutions that lead to sustainable development, Abengoa has organised an international award that aims to publicly recognise the best sustainability initiatives carried out by companies around the world.
