Abengoa, with the collaboration of Zeroemissions, has participated as a pilot company in the new GHG Protocol standard

September 1, 2010

The World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) have developed, with the collaboration of more than 60 companies from different areas and 17 countries, two new Greenhouse Gases Protocol standards: the Product Lifecycle Accounting and Reporting Standard and the Scope 3 (Corporate Value Chain) Accounting and Reporting Standard.

GHG Protocol Scope 3 provides the entire value chain of the company, taking into account the impacts both upstream and downstream operations.

In addition of Abengoa, the only Spanish company selected, more than 60 companies from 17 different countries have collaborated to create this new standard. Companies that participated in the exercise include, 3 M, Acer Inc., Airbus S.A.S, Bloomberg LP, Coca-Cola Erfrischungsgetränke AG, Deutsche Post DHL, Ford Motor Company, General Electric, Herman Miller, Inc., IKEA, Levi Strauss & Co., Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, PepsiCo, Inc., Pfizer, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Procter & Gamble Eurocor, SC Johnson, Shell International Petroleum Company Ltd and Siemens AG.

The revised standards based on feedback will be released in September, the date on which interested parties may make relevant comments. The final version will be published by March 2011.

Over the last decade a close collaboration between the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development has arisen, with the aim of working with companies, governments and environmental groups to undertake credible and effective projects that, at the same time, are respectful with the environment.

Most of companies value the use of the standards and agree that they help in identifying GHG reduction opportunities. In this way, the standards create competitive advantage and improve credibility and transparency of companies, their products and GHG reporting.
