Abengoa joins European Transgreen project as a founding member

July 5, 2010

  • This initiative, which forms part of the Mediterranean Solar Plan, will promote the development of a Euro-Mediterranean electricity network.
  • As a signatory to the protocol, Abengoa is participating alongside ten other leading international companies to generate, transport and distribute electricity, and to design, construct and operate networks.

Madrid, 5 July 2010. Abengoa has today signed up to the Transgreen project in Paris as a founding member. The project facilitates the objectives of the Union for the Mediterranean initiative in Europe, helping to implement the Mediterranean Solar Plan, one of its most important programs. Transgreen aims to promote and develop a Euro-Mediterranean electricity network that facilitates the transport of energy produced in the countries on the southern side of the Mediterranean Sea to the European market.

Transgreen also includes a strategic plan for constructing electricity lines under the sea in order to connect the two sides of the Mediterranean. There is currently only one operational electricity interconnection in service between Europe and North Africa (Spain-Morocco).

The Transgreen initiative was set up initially by ten other partners, that are international leaders in the generation, transport and distribution of electricity, and the design, construction and operation of networks: Electricité de France, EDF; Areva; Atos Origin; Alstom; Red de Transporte de Electricidad de Francia, RTE EDF Transport, a subsidiary of EDF; Siemens; Prysmian; Nexans; Veolia; Red Eléctrica de España, and Caisse des Dépôts.

Abengoa will contribute its experience and leadership to the project as a technology company that applies innovative solutions for sustainable development in the infrastructures, environment and energy sectors.

Abengoa is the largest international company in terms of the construction of transmission and distribution infrastructures, with nearly 10,000 kilometres of electricity lines under concession, and is the second largest company in terms of electricity infrastructures. It is also a leader in the design and construction of efficient electricity lines and installations, and in the design and construction of renewable energy plants.

Abengoa is a pioneer in the development of thermosolar technology having constructed the first two commercial solar tower plants in the world (PS10 and PS20), both in Spain, and the first two hybrid technology plants (ISCC), located in Morocco and Algeria.

Abengoa is a technology company that applies innovative solutions for sustainable development in the infrastructures, environment and energy sectors. It is listed company and its five business groups of Solar Energy, Bioenergy, Environmental Services, Information Technology, and Industrial Engineering and Construction operate in more than 70 countries (www.abengoa.com).
