Hynergreen opens the renewable hydrogen service station of the Hercules project in Sanlúcar la Mayor

June 16, 2010

  • The new hydrogen service station will be the first in southern Spain and one of only a few in the world to produce hydrogen from solar energy.
  • An electric all-terrain vehicle with a fuel cell that uses hydrogen supplied by the station, developed in conjunction with Santana Motor, will be on show at the opening.

Seville, 16 June 2010.- The regional minister of economy, innovation and science from the regional government of Andalusia, Antonio Ávila Cano, and the Mayor of Sanlúcar la Mayor, Raúl Castilla Gutiérrez, together with the Technical Secretary-General of Abengoa, José Domínguez Abascal, and the General Manager of Hynergreen, Javier Brey, opened the renewable hydrogen service station of the Hercules project, located at the Solúcar Platform in Sanlúcar la Mayor, Seville.

The new hydrogen service station is the first in southern Spain and one of just a few in the world to produce hydrogen from solar energy. The station is part of the Hercules project, an Andalusian initiative coordinated by Hynergreen and supported by the Innovation and Development Agency of Andalusia (IDEA), and the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science, which has classified it as a Strategic and Singular Scientific-Technology Project.

An electric vehicle powered by a fuel cell that uses hydrogen supplied by the service station has also been developed in collaboration with Santana Motor, as part of the project.

José Domínguez Abascal, Technical Secretary-General of Abengoa, highlighted the importance of the station, which “shows our clear commitment to hydrogen as an alternative, renewable, clean and sustainable fuel”.

“We began down this path more than ten years ago. The experience that we have gained during this time has positioned Hynergreen at the head of the sector with latest generation hydrogen production systems developed with its own patents and technologies, and with electrical and thermal energy production systems based on fuel cells”, added José Domínguez Abascal.

On the other hand, Javier Brey, General Manager of Hynergreen, pointed out that “Hynergreen has invested more than ten million Euros over the last few years in R&D in these technologies”.

The Hercules project, which began in January 2006, has a budget of more than €9 million and involves Solúcar R&D (Abengoa Solar), Santana Motor, Carburos Metálicos, GreenPower, the Andalusian Energy Agency, INTA and AICIA.

Hynergreen is owned by Abeinsa, the company that heads Abengoa’s industrial engineering and construction business group. It specialises in organising and operating businesses and activities related to electricity generation using fuel cells, through its different technologies, as well as producing hydrogen from renewable sources and its clean and efficient use.

Abengoa is a technology company that applies innovative solutions to sustainable development in the infrastructures, environment and energy sectors. It is public listed company and its five business groups of Solar Energy, Bioenergy, Environmental Services, Information Technology, and Industrial Engineering and Construction operate in more than 70 countries (www.abengoa.com).
