The Focus-Abengoa Foundation offers a concert by the Chamber Orchestra of the Royal Symphonic Orchestra of Seville, accompanied by the Foundation's titular organist, José Enrique Ayarra

Seville, 23 April 2004.- As has been the case since 1994, the Focus-Abengoa Foundation will offer, at 12.00 hours on 25 April, in its Hospital de los Venerables headquarters, another concert by the Chamber Orchestra of the Royal Symphonic Orchestra of Seville, with Biao Xue conducting, and the Foundation's titular organist, José Enrique Ayarra, accompanying the orchestra.

The Chamber Orchestra will play, for the first time, works by Sancho, Haendel and Bartok.Plain Entertainment, the first piece on the program, was composed by Jesús Sancho, a member of the RSOS. This work was composed in 1994 but was not played until 2003 by the Manuel de Falla Orchestra of Cadiz, with Jerome Ireland conducting. It is a short piece, in only one tempo, in which a game is reflected where the main theme and several motives are fragmented and spread out among the different string sections in the manner of small imitations of a contrapuntal nature.

José Enrique Ayarra will play the soloist section of the Concert for the Organ (HWV 310), the central piece of the program, on the exceptional organ in the Hospital de los Venerables, the construction of which was entrusted by the Focus-Abengoa Foundation to the German organ maker, Gerhard Grenzing. First played in 1991, it is considered one of the best of its type in Europe for the playing of Baroque music.

The concert will be brought to a close with the work composed in 1939 upon request by Sacher and dedicated to his Bâle Chamber Orchestra,Entertainment by Bartok, performed for the first time in June 1940. The happy and lighthearted score is developed in three tempos: Allegro non tropp, Molto adagio and Allegro assai. At times, it resuscitates the spirit of Haendel and requires all the verve that can be demanded of an orchestra of soloists.

The Chamber Orchestra of the Royal Symphonic Orchestra of Seville was established in 1998 to cover the repertoire of music written for chamber orchestras. It is composed of the Symphonic Orchestra teachers under the artistic management of its concertmasters and, since its Premiere Performance in Seville on 24 February 1998, its music stands have incorporated an ever-increasing repertoire that includes the main chamber works, covering a historic and aesthetic period that commences in Baroque (J. S. Bach, G. F. Haendel, A. Vivaldi, G.B. Pergolesi,...), to continue with Classicism music (F. J. Haydn, W. A. Mozart), the romantic and post-romantic creators (J. Suk, E. Elgar, E. Grieg, F. Mendelssohn, P. I. Tchaikovski,...) or the contemporary writers (B. Brittem, M. Mozetich, N. Rota, ...) and Spanish composers (I. Albéniz, J. C. Arriaga, J. Turina,...).

Since the very year of its creation, the Chamber Orchestra of the Royal Symphonic Orchestra of Seville has been included each season in the Focus-Abengoa Foundation's music program for los Venerables.

Focus-Abengoa Foundation came into being in 1982 as a consequence of the cultural activity initiated by Abengoa in 1972 when the company published the works titled Sevillian Subjects and Iconography of Seville. At the same time, the company created a collection of documents, books and prints on the Kingdom of Seville or by Sevillian authors. This initial cultural activity made Abengoa?s senior management realize the importance of revealing itself beyond the restraints of its essential technological functions through an activity that would benefit society as a whole, and thus Fundación Fondo de Cultura de Seville (FOCUS) was established.

The activities of the Foundation have been increasing with time, faithfully complying with its foundational objective of promoting culture in its diverse artistic and scientific manifestations. The main protagonists in the life of Focus-Abengoa have been education, painting, restoration, and music, followed by seminars, the written word and prints.

Biao Xue

Born in China in 1963, he studied music at the Shenyang and Shangai academies of music (1978-1981), Houston University (1986-1989) and at the String School of Cleveland, Ohio (1987 and 1988). He received classes from Fredell Lack, Kenneth Goldsmith, Albert Muenzer, Laurence Wbeeler, Isaac Stern, Camilla Wicks, Gyoge Pauke...

Winner of the Chinese National Violin Competition in 1984 and of the Chinese National Chamber Music Competition in 1985, he also came first in the International Young Players' Competition of Kinsville in 1987. Moreover, he won second prize in the Shopmaker Violin Competition in Kansas City in 1988.

From 1985 to 1986, he was concertmaster of the Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra of Peking. Since then, he has played in the Tampa Orchestra of Florida, Chinese Virtuoso, Beaumont Symphony, Houston Ballet, Symphonic Orchestra of Houston University (concertmaster), Lake Charles Philharmonic, Houston Pop Orchestra, Houston Symphony (1986-1989); lead violinist in the New American Chamber Orchestra (1989-1990) and as concertmaster in the Royal Symphonic Orchestra of Seville.

Further to conducting the Chamber Orchestra of the Royal Symphonic Orchestra of Seville, he has played soloist with the Houston Civic Symphony (Brahms), the Galveston Symphony Orchestra (Elgar) and the Royal Symphonic Orchestra of Seville (Beethoven, Brahms,...).

José Enrique Ayarra Jarne

He born in Jaca (Huesca) and commenced music studies at the age of three. He qualified as Piano Teacher at the Academy of Music of Zaragoza at the age of eleven and in Organ Playing and Gregorian Chant at the Catholic Institute of Paris, graduated in Holy Theology at the Pontifical University of Salamanca and was Canonized Titular Organist of the Cathedral of Seville and Hospital de los Venerables of Seville. He was Organ Professor at the Senior Academy of Music of Seville, from 1979 to 2002. Numerary member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel of Hungary of Seville. Corresponding academician of those of San Fernando (Madrid) and Nuestra Señora de las Angustias (Granada). He is technical-musical adviser to the Royal Symphonic Orchestra of Seville, of the Artistic Heritage Department of the archbishopric of Seville and of the Focus-Abengoa Foundation.

General Co-coordinator of the 3rd National Spanish Organ Congress (Focus-Abengoa Foundation, Seville 1998) and President of the Hispanic Organ Association (HOA).

He has won, among others, the Regional Government of Andalusia's "Andalusia Music Prize" in 1990. As a concert player, he has played in more than thirty countries throughout Europe, Africa, America and Asia; he has recorded for radio and television programs in more than a dozen countries, and has recorded records of organ music played at different European academies, with the recording of the integral work of Francisco Correa de Arauxo on historical Andalusian instruments, that of Spanish music for the organ on Yamaguchi's Beckerat (Japan) for the NHK, and the work Baroque airs on the los Venerables organ, for RTVE (2003), being especially noteworthy.
