Water is an essential but scarce resource in various parts of the world either in terms of quantity or quality. We can obtain water that is suitable for human consumption through processes such as desalination or water treatment.

The water management and generation market is currently growing quickly, with strong investment forecast around the world, especially in the United States, China, the Middle East, India, North Africa and Latin America. The reason for this growth lies in the increase in the planet’s population and the scarcity of water resources.

Engineering and construction:

With more than 70 years of experience, Abengoa is a leading company around the world for water-related engineering projects.

Abengoa designs and constructs water infrastructures and facilities, especially desalination and water treatment plants, and water distribution and transport infrastructures (irrigation, supply, control systems, etc.).

We are specialists in designing, constructing and launching turn-key projects for desalination plants using reverse osmosis technology. This desalination technology has proved to be the most efficient and the fastest growing in recent years. The specialist publication Global Water Intelligence ranks Abengoa as one of the leading companies in the world for desalinating sea water and brackish water.

Concession - type infrastructure:

We operate water generation facilities (mainly desalination plants) through concession agreements. We guarantee the sale of the water that we produce by using "take-or-pay" contracts with public water management companies.

Our desalination plants that are currently operational in Spain, Algeria and India have a combined production capacity of 375,000 m³/day . We also have three plants under construction in Algeria and China that will produce a further 500,000 m³/day.
